The Forest Haunt | Yeats the Shoemaker
When walking the many paths that weave through Cloven Forest and beyond, you need a good pair of shoes on your feet. Comfortable, sturdy, functional, maybe even stylish, if that’s your thing. But more so, you need a good shoemaker.
That’s where Yeats comes in. He can craft you a pair of footwear from just about anything – so long as it falls within his strict shoemaking guidelines – as he will never construct a shoe from anything less than the finest materials. He believes in treating your feet like the precious foundations they are and only the best will do…
And whatever you may desire – rugged outsoles, heels, straps, buttons, buckles, lace up or mule – Yeats can create the shoe of your dreams.
He styled a pair of whimsical heeled, tapestry oxfords for me awhile back and they’re still one of the most cherished pieces of handmade workmanship I own.
As far as the man himself, Yeats learned his trade from his predecessor & uncle, Val. Quietly observing and carefully noting – asking questions when necessary and trying his hand at cordwainery only when he felt sure he’d learned enough to make a pair of shoes worthy of Val’s praise – after all, his uncle had been making footwear for near 7 decades at the time.
Now Yeats has been in business for a good 40 years himself. The first few years apprenticing with Val until finally, Yeats was adept enough to branch out on his own, taking the reins from his uncle and handling the daily workload alone – and keeping quite busy too.
Which sometimes irritates his feline family, when his schedule doesn’t allow for enough pets and chin scratches, food and of course, outside-inside-outside-inside time. In recent years, he’s adopted 8 cats, 2 kittens and then a few more just waltzed in, to which he obviously couldn’t say no.
Otherwise, Yeats pretty much keeps to himself. He’s quiet and caring but not overly social. He likes his cats, his books, evening strolls, listening to chamber music, visiting Honeystalks Bakery for their pepper knots and of course, making shoes.
Oh and if you’re interested, the cats & kittens are respectfully named as follows …
Damaris (but mostly called Maris), Cinder, Earl Grey (Yeats’ favorite tea), Nimbus, Inkblot aka Inky, Brunhilde aka Hilde, Mr. Whitlock, Gallio (one of the kittens), Chamois aka Shammy-kins, Olive, Little Freyja, Menken & Acorn (the other kitten, named for his first toy).
