Legend & Lore | The Dullahan
The Dullahan is a type of legendary creature in Irish folklore. He is sometimes depicted as a man, sometimes as a woman.
Portrayed as a headless horseman, typically on a black horse, and he is either a headless body without a head or he carries his own head in his hand or under his arm.
Some say, a Dullahan can see thru the eyes of its severed head. While others hold to the notion that a Dullahan strikes out at his victim's eyes, using a whip crafted from a human spine, in anger - for the lack of his own ability to see.
A Dullahan may also be seen driving a horse-drawn carriage, known as the Death Coach, out of graveyards. Mention of a Dullahan's appearance often develops near a graveyard or a charnel vault where a wicked aristocrat is reputed to be buried ...
His destination - the doorstep of a person whose death is approaching.
The unfortunate prospect could always try brandishing a bit of gold to keep the horseman at bay - there is a belief that golden objects can force a Dullahan to disappear.
